Urban Clothing for Women
A common misconception that has been around since the introduction of urban clothing is that there is no such thing as urban clothing for women. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The reason that it seems like a very male-dominated area of fashion is because there are many differences between urban fashion for men and urban fashion for women. Additionally, this type of clothing is marketed towards men more than it is towards women.
The problem with many clothing lines for women
The biggest problem that I have noticed with the majority of women’s fashion is that a certain ‘look’ tends to come into fashion for a certain demographic. Looking at a recent example, the popularity of ‘jeggings’ has really skyrocketed in the last few years. The problem with this is, you walk down the average high street and half of the young women on the street are wearing them! Surely you’d think in this day and age it should be easy to look different – obviously not.
What stops us from looking different
The vast majority of people don’t want to look the same as everyone else. This doesn’t mean that you need to be particularly adventurous, rather find a look that no one else (or at least fewer people) are wearing. Here’s what is stopping us: Most of the creative, amazing designs that we crave have a price tag that is completely unrealistic for the average earner. How many items of clothing can you afford at several hundred pounds a pop – the answer for most of us is not many or more realistically none!
One possible solution
First and foremost, it is important to look at what other options are available to you, even if these options are a bit more ‘niche’. After all, isn’t that the point? Choosing something that will help you to achieve a fresh, fashionable look without breaking the bank. Before instantly dismissing the idea of urban clothing, bear in mind that the term ‘urban’ incorporates so many different clothing lines, fashions and styles that you have to check them out for yourself first. There are a number of bright and edgy urban t-shirt designs for women available. You could buy a couple of these as statement t-shirts for a good base and then team them with a more generic chino or sweat pant bottom. If you are artistic you could also consider customising your own hoodies and zip tops with bright fabric pens.
A credible alternative
Perhaps you’ve never looked into urban clothing for women. From my experience, I have seen that much of this type of clothing are simply slights variation on ‘high street classics’. However, it is the extra little bit of quirkiness that makes women’s urban clothing so alluring and desirable. Look in any type of ‘gossip’ magazine or modern pop video, and you’ll be amazed at how many young women are wearing urban clothing today.
