Foods to Prevent Cancer
It is now basically an undisputed fact that one of the best ways not only to ward off but to fight tumors is through food choices and overall eating habits. Independent and governmental studies have shown that diets rich in cancer fighting foods nearly eliminate the risks of some of the more prominent types of the affliction.
In fact the American Cancer society itself estimated that a third of all deaths from this disease might be diet-related. Here are some easy, accessible, and cheap examples of nature’s medicine cabinet. Keep in mind that organic is the best money can buy, but as long as the product is cleaned thoroughly and hasn’t been tampered with genetically, the results can be counted on. Two rules of thumb are to buy as many while in season and to stay as local as possible.
When thinking about what foods to get, imagine a bright colorful rainbow. The more colorful the vegetable or fruit the higher it is in antioxidants and chemical components like indole-3-cirbinol which combat things like breast cancer.
Green:
Broccoli, cabbage, and seaweed are all jam packed with beta-carotene, vitamin B12, as well as fiber and are the kind of carbohydrates that do not pack on the pounds. Avocadoes have plenty of potassium and can count for the daily requirement of fat which is a great alternative to oils.
Orange:
Carrots, oranges and lemons, and grapefruits are also good choices. Keep in mind that for carrots it is best not to cook them, because doing so turns off an important cancer combating agent. The fruits contain limonene which is something that helps our bodies produce cancer destroying immune system cells.
Red:
Tomatoes, Raspberries, Cranberries, Strawberries, and Red Peppers are chalk full of helpful vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that seek out and obliterate roaming oxygen molecules which are more commonly known as free radicals.
Yellow:
Peaches, yellow peppers, golden kiwifruit, and mangoes help to lower LDL cholesterol and blood pressure levels, but also have plenty of flavonoids which decrease the propensity for things like prostate cancer.
Blueberries:
Blueberries were and still are considered a medicine by the Native American tribes of North America. They contain these immensely powerful and interesting phytochemicals called anthocyanins, which is actually where they get their rich blue hue. These little guys are the heavy hitters of the antioxidant family.
White:
Cauliflower, mushrooms, and garlic contain things like polysaccharides and lend the body a hand in building up its immune system. Add to this their ability to battle carcinogens and it is obvious why these are valuable sources of nutrients.
As you can see nearly everything that has been named is a carbohydrate. Because they are mainly water based one can consume large quantities and feel great doing so. Mixed with the right amounts of proteins and unsaturated fats they are not only going to be turning the body into a cancer terminating machine but will be trimming it down in no time as well.
Fighting cancer on the chemical level is a seamless effort. It is about treating the entire form all at once and as the saying goes, “We are what we eat.” These foods can be fit into any busy schedule, can be worked into any meal from breakfast to a midnight snack, and can also easily be blended to fit snugly into one quick drink.
So instead of following the rainbow it is time to on a daily basis eat one, in the form of bright colorful fruits and vegetables which foster and sustain healthy bodies. Instead of a pot of gold what one gets are a much cleaner and less expensive bill of health and a happier more fulfilling life.
