Kill those flakes with home remedies
What is dandruff?
When the scalp becomes very dry, dead tissues of the skin start flaking. These flakes fall off when you comb or brush your hair and sometimes they shed on their own. There might be a resultant fungal or bacterial infection which causes the scalp to get dry, and then start itching. If not treated in time, an infection sets in, which aggravates the problem.
There are two kinds of dandruff
- Dry dandruff – when the scalp starts itching, and the white scaly tissue flakes off.
- Waxy dandruff – when the scaly tissues get mixed with the oil of the scalp, becoming thick and patchy.
Causes of dandruff
Many a times, the onslaught of dandruff results from a faulty lifestyle. These are some of the common trigger factors:
- Poor nutrition
- Hair that is not thoroughly washed and cleaned
- Cheap shampoos attractively packaged but low on action
- Unwashed and dirty brushes and combs
- Indigestion and constipation, as these cause toxicity in the system
- Stress and emotional tension
Solutions in your kitchen
Before you go in for chemical treatment of dandruff, try some of these home remedies! These are safe and though these may take time to show results, none of them have harmful side effects.
Methi magic: Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds, overnight. Make a paste of these seeds in the morning and apply it on the scalp, so that the whole scalp is fully covered with the paste. Leave it on for half an hour and then wash it off with a solution of Ritha nuts or Shikakai. Make sure that the scalp is thoroughly cleaned.
Tangy cleansing: Take 2 tablespoons of curd, mix in 3 drops of honey, and 3 drops of lime juice. Mix this thoroughly, and apply it to the scalp. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then wash it off. Scrub your scalp thoroughly so that all the mixture is washed off.
Virgin coco-wash: Warm some coconut oil in a bowl. Massage this into the scalp for at least 15 minutes. Dip a towel in hot water, wring it and then wrap the towel around the head. Keep this on for 15 minutes, or for as long as you can feel the heat on your head. Wash your hair in hot water making sure that all the oil is completely washed off.
Lime scourge: Rub lime juice into your scalp. Leave it on for 15 minutes. Wash your hair thoroughly. Repeat this process every time you spot dandruff in your hair.
Olive-Almond mania: Mix equal quantities of olive oil and almond oil in a bowl. Rub this mixture into your scalp. Leave it on for about 5 to 10 minutes, and then wash it off.
Alternatively, try these
- Apply Aloe Vera gel to your scalp. Leave it on for 15 minutes, and then shampoo your hair.
- If you have thyme in your kitchen, boil 4 or 5 leaves in a cup of water for 10 minutes. Cool the concoction and then apply it to the scalp. Leave it for half an hour. Then rinse it off, and shampoo your hair clean.
