Tips for Proper Eye Care

Our vision is one of the most overlooked senses when it comes to care. While many people concentrate on parts of our body people can see such as weight, teeth, and hair, we tend to forget the eyes that allow us to see others. Taking care of your sight is extremely important. This is especially true as we age. If you have a routine to keep your body and hair in great shape, be sure to add a routine for your eye care as well. Here are a few tips to help you care for your peepers.Eye Care

Get Regular Eye Exams:

The first thing you should always consider when caring for your eyes are regular eye exams. Many people won’t notice deteriorating sight until it is too late. A regular eye exam will act as a preventative measure against damage caused by the way you live every day.

Healthy Eating and Multi-Vitamins:

As kids we learn that carrots are great for eyesight. This is due to the Vitamin A in the carrots. There are plenty of other fruits and vegetables that are rich in Vitamin A that should be added to your diet. Mangoes, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, lettuce and cantaloupe are just a few. Liver, egg yolks, and mozzarella cheese also contain Vitamin A that can help you see better. If you find it hard to keep Vitamin A in your diet, a good multi-vitamin containing Vitamin A can be a supplement.

Wear Sunglasses:

One of the main causes of eye damage is the sun. Though sunglasses are often used as a fashion accessory, they serve a purpose. During the bright days, be sure to protect your eyes with a good pair of shades.

Wear a Hat:

If sunglasses are just not your style, wearing a hat with a large brim that blocks the sun can be an option. This will help keep the light out of your eyes and assure your vision stays clear.

Use Proper Lighting:

Many of us enjoy reading and often curl up at night with a good book. Though dim light won’t cause immediate damage, reading in low light can eventually cause strain on your eyes and affect your vision. Be sure to use proper lighting when reading at night. This can include a brightly lit room or just a light shining on what you are reading. Either one will reduce the strain of trying to see the words in the dark.

Limit Reading Screens:

Computers, laptops, and tablets are becoming the standard in homes. Though these gadgets offer a vast amount of entertainment, resources and information, they can also offer eye damage. If you find yourself in front of your computer screen for hours each day, be sure to take a break every 20-30 minutes. Look away from the screen and focus on an object in the distance for a few seconds. Our eyes are trained from birth to see 3D images around us. Constant viewing of a 2D screen can strain your eyes and cause damage over time.

Our eyes are very important for everyday living. If you take the right precautions and steps for proper eye care, you can keep your vision sharp and clear. As we age, we experience deteriorating vision that naturally occurs. By properly caring for your eyes, you can help combat this deterioration and slow the effects.
