Productivity Tips for Work-at-Home Moms
Contrary to what some may believe, working at home is not necessarily easier than having a regular day job. For a variety of reasons, it can even be more challenging. Especially for women who are married with children, or single women who raise their kids alone. If you are a work-at-home mom, you need to adopt special measures if you ever want to get anything done.
Set a firm schedule.
A work schedule is indispensable to your long-term success. Your schedule must include 1) the amount of work you want done, 2) the time frame you expect to get that work done, and 3) the time of day/week you will work. In the beginning, you may need to adjust and readjust your schedule until you find the perfect routine. Don’t give up if you fail to follow through with your plan at first. Sooner or later you will get better at managing your time and resources.
Don’t let anyone interrupt you at work.
Once your routine is set, adhere to it. Let your kids, spouse and other family members know that they shouldn’t and can’t interrupt you while you are working. This takes time to explain to others who have never worked from home; the key is persistence and patience on your part.
Take care of the most important stuff first.
It’s tempting for workaholic moms and women to jump into work first thing in the day. But that’s not a good idea when you have a family like a husband and kids. Get your most basic chores out of the way first. These should include cooking, making up the bed and loading the dishwasher. You don’t have to do everything first of course; just the most essential. The rest can wait until after you have done your work for the day.
Have other family members help with chores.
There’s no need to be a martyr if other members of your household can help you. Give each member a reasonable share of duties, without giving up your own. Don’t over-burden anyone or they will resent you and your work-at-home business. Make sure your kids understand the value of doing household chores and helping family.
Don’t forget to rest from your work.
You might not realize it, but work-at-home women are more in danger of overworking themselves than those whose jobs are confined to the office or field. When you do your business at home, you are never really away from your business. You have to consciously tear yourself away from it each time so you can be with your family, not just physically but mentally and emotionally. Make an effort to detach yourself from work when work is done. Just be a mom, wife and/or daughter then.
Take advantage of sleep, work and/or school.
Nap time for kids gives moms the chance to get a lot of things done. Make the most of this golden opportunity. Check your mail, write your blog posts, redesign your company logo, or whatever it is you need to do. If you can wake up a few hours ahead of your kids and spouse, or stay up after them, use that time also. With everyone asleep, you will find it much easier to concentrate at what you are doing. For women whose spouses go to work and kids go to school daily, it is even better. You have pretty much a full day to take care of business.
