15 Fun Activities to Improve the Reading Skills of Your Kids

Kids ActivitiesKnowing how to read fluently can give your kids the keys to success.  If you are looking for a way to impact the future of your children, consider helping them improve their reading skills.  There are many fun ways that you can help your kids improve in reading without them even realizing it.  Use some of the activities below to help you.

  1. Family game night.  Playing games as a family is a fun way of improving reading skills.  Choose games that are on your children’s level and that will encourage them to read. Require them to read aloud during the game.
  2. Magazine subscriptions.  There are many magazines geared towards children that will give your children hours of reading enjoyment. National Geographic for kids will help your child learn about animals and history while also creating a love for reading.
  3. The roadways.  Most families spend hours and hours of the week on the roadway.  Use this to your advantage and improve the reading skills of your kids by encouraging them to read road signs, billboards, etc. There are many different things for your child to read while on the roadway. Encourage your child to bring a book along on the journey for extra reading time.
  4. Putting things together. If your children get new toys that require assembly, let them help you by reading the directions aloud.  They will likely enjoy the project and be super excited about the new additions.
  5. Read WITH your child.  Children are often willing to read if they have someone by their side.  Help improve your child’s reading skills by setting time aside each day for reading.
  6. Choosing food from a menu. The menu at your favorite restaurant is also a good way to improve reading skills in your kids. When you go out to eat, allow them to read and choose what they want from the menu.
  7. Frequent trips to the library.  How often do you take your kids to the library? This is a great place to help improve reading skills. Ask about summer reading programs that your children can get involved in.
  8. Computer reading programs.  For a boost in reading, invest in fun computer reading programs that can help your child.  Computer reading programs such as Hooked on Phonics can greatly improve your children’s reading skills.
  9. Books on CD.  Many of the books that your kids enjoy are available on CD.  Improve their reading skills by allowing them to read along with the CD.
  10. Write them letters.  Write your kids a letter each day that will encourage them to read. Leave it in a special place. Get creative with the letters.  Let them know what will be for supper and other special family activities that are going on.
  11. Allow them to browse the internet. If you have filter on your computer, let your kids explore a little. Using the internet requires reading.  You will quickly find their skills getting better after just a few short sessions on the internet.
  12. Customized story books.  There are websites that allow you to customize children’s books using your child’s name.  Get a special book for your child to read.  The more he reads, the better his skills will become.
  13. Series books. Choose books that have series such as Goosebumps.  You child will anxiously await the next book!  Require him to read the book at least twice before you purchase the next book.
  14. Baking. Let your kids help you out in the kitchen in an effort to improve reading skills.  Baking often requires reading direction.
  15. Leapfrog videos.  There are also videos geared toward improving your kids’ reading skills.  Consider investing in Leapfrog videos that are fun and encourage a love for reading.
