3 Ways to Get Your Baby to Sleep
The task of getting a baby to sleep through the night can be a difficult one, especially for new parents. It can be done though, and if you are prepared to put in the work it might be easier than you think. Here are 3 tips for acheiving the all important full nights sleep!
1. Allow Time to Relax and Wind Down
Many adults enjoy sitting down and relaxing after a long day at work. They may read a book, watch a movie or simply sit on the couch and think. You need this time to prepare your body for sleep; few people can come home and immediately crawl into their bed.
Babies are no different, they too need the chance to wind down and by developing this into a routine you can help your child sleep through the night. Do your best to create a quiet atmosphere as bedtime nears. Read them a book or carry them around in your arms.
2. Be Consistent
If you are not consistent, even the best plan for making a child feel sleepy will not work for long. Children need to have structure, and by putting them to bed at the same time each night, you are also giving them a sense of comfort.
Make sure that you also wake them up at the same time each morning. Although it may take some time, sooner or later your baby will understand that night time is for sleeping, not for playing or eating.
3. Be Patient and Take Things Slow
Do not rush the process; if you expect things to change over the course of a day or two, you are only setting yourself up for frustration. A baby needs time in order to fully adjust to a new routine; they may not understand at first.
If they are not in their crib when they are starting to fall asleep, do not immediately move them. Allow them to stay where they are for roughly ten minutes; by that time they will be in deep sleep mode and are less likely to wake up as you carry them.
As just about every parent knows, it is not easy to get a baby to go to sleep at night. Because of this, a household can succumb to anger and loss of sleep. Before giving in and allowing a baby to cry and scream through the night – which is never a good idea – first consider the tips above. The baby will be happier and healthier thanks to a routine and a full night of sleep.
